Retro Quote – Richard M. Nixon

“I gave ’em a sword.  And they stuck it in, and they twisted it with relish.  And I guess if I had been in their position, I’d have done the same thing.”

  1. Just goes to show that all politicians are wearing the same cloak!

    • Indeed, they are! It’s left me cynical enough to question my own commitment to the voting process. Here in the U.S. the Electoral College has always had the last word in the presidential race. If the 2000 presidential elections didn’t provide enough reason for the abolition of the Electoral College, I don’t know what will.

Both the 2000 and 2016 elections were blatant frauds, albeit under different circumstances. Nineteen years ago the U.S. Supreme Court stopped the recount in the state of Florida, which handed the presidency to the incredibly inept George W. Bush. Three years ago Russian interference led to Donald Trump’s ascent to the White House. I thought Bush was incompetent and disconnected. But Trump has the dubious distinction of superseding even him!

It’s all truly embarrassing for the so-called beacon of democracy across the globe.

      • I totally agree but then is it bad enough to make fools rethink the electoral process? How would changes like that come into being? If you cannot achieve universal health care and some level of gun control through legislative changes, would this indicate that the hearts and minds of Americans are difficult to change. But then they are traits of hope. Public opinion has changed in terms of female rights with the metoo movement, so why not the electoral college? We had some obeying results in elections too where the polly with the popular vote didn’t win because they didn’t achieve wins in key areas. At the last national election, one state determined the whole result and that voter expression was based on local issues like jobs.
