Images captured in the aftermath of a horrific blast of ammonium nitrate in the port of Beirut, Lebanon on August 5 that killed at least 135 people and injured more than 5,000 others show a city in chaos.
The following day Beirut resident Hoda Melki captured her mother playing “Auld Lang Syne” on a piano amidst the blast-related debris and damage in her apartment.
Very tragic. This was a huge blow.
Yes, it is. It’s such a shame that the Middle East continues to embroil itself in such hate and animosity anyway. But then this happens to Lebanon. It seems to be a horrifically tragic accident, but they certainly don’t need any more trauma on top of everything else that’s happened to them.
But I feel the woman playing the piano is, in a sense, saying goodbye to a very bad moment and still trying to say life continues. As unpleasant as things can be, they can get better and life moves forward. I can identify, as I overcome some personal difficulties and reassess my own life – which is why that video struck me so emotionally.
Indeed, Alejandro. Life moves on. It can but do little else.
