Strangest Quote of the Week

pablo-pantoja

“Yes, I have changed my political affiliation to the Democratic Party.  It doesn’t take much to see the culture of intolerance surrounding the Republican Party today.  I have wondered before about the seemingly harsh undertones about immigrants and others.  Look no further; a well-known organization recently confirms the intolerance of that which seems different or strange to them.”

– Pablo Pantoja, announcing his resignation as Director of Hispanic Outreach for the Republican National Party in Florida.

Pantoja cites the RNP’s inaction on immigration reform as a catalyst for his decision, but says a report by the extremist Heritage Foundation that suggested Hispanics have lower IQs finally just pushed him into the other camp.  These days a southern Republican switching to the Democratic Party is like an Indian joining Custer’s army.  I know a few Hispanics who vote Republican on a regular basis – including some in my own family – but I love them anyway.  I keep saying that immigration is not the only issue affecting Hispanics.  To most of us, the economy and jobs are top priority.  And, since the Republican Party seems hell-bent on doing nothing about that, their “outreach” efforts will keep falling on its collective ass.

Wolf lovers…give it a rest.

Indeed, sport hunting is a misnomer. I’m sure if animals had their chance, they’d take humans out in an instant.

Mike Grant's avatarMike Grant - Author

Your bleeding heart blogs, comments, and photographs of butchered lobos are wasted on those who should be taking notice. In fact these outcries provide a particular and peculiar self-satisfaction to those who participate in this noble sport of wolf hunting…wait.

Sport? I must be clear on the precise meaning of the word before I fling it about. This is only one definition, there are plenty more…most with the same characterization.

Sport: Noun, an activity involving physical exertion and skill in which an individual or team competes in play against another or others equally equipped in an environment designed to provide a level playing arena.

I can’t honestly say that I recall seeing any wolves or wolf videos that showed them in possession of high-powered semi-automatic assault weapons with scopes that can pick out footprints on the moon. To be fair and clear, I’m not saying there aren’t any…just that I haven’t…

From Pyramid to Rocks

Not much remains of the Nohmul Pyramid in Belize.

Not much remains of the Nohmul Pyramid in Belize.

In one of the most egregious incidents of blatant stupidity, a road crew in the tiny Central American nation of Belize almost completely destroyed a 2,300-year-old Mayan pyramid to create road fill.  Jaime Awe, head of the Belize Institute of Archeology, announced on Monday that the destruction of Nohmul, near the border with México, was detected last week.  They managed to halt any further destruction and have zoned off the site.

“It’s a feeling of incredible disbelief because of the ignorance and the insensitivity … they were using this for road fill,” Awe said.  “It’s like being punched in the stomach.  It’s just so horrendous.”

Nohmul, which stood about 100 feet high, dates to at least 230 B.C. and was well-known to Belize authorities.  It sat in a privately-owned sugar cane field, but its presence was obvious, noted Awe, who insisted that the road crew couldn’t possibly have mistaken it for a natural hill.

“These guys knew that this was an ancient structure,” Awe said.  “It’s just bloody laziness.”

The Belize community-action group Citizens Organized for Liberty Through Action called the destruction of the archaeological site “an obscene example of disrespect for the environment and history.”

If there’s any good thing, it’s that the road crew and whoever was in charge of it could face criminal charges, since Belize has a federal prohibiting the destruction of such sites.

But, it’s not the first time this has happened.  For years, pre-Hispanic archeological sites have been destroyed throughout Latin America to make room for buildings, soccer stadiums and parking lots.  In Puebla, México, the “Iglesia de Neustra Señora de los Remedios” (Church of Our Lady of Remedies) sits atop the Cholula Pyramid, which dates to the 3rd century B.C. and is the largest pyramid in the world.  But, that church is very old; constructed years before most people realized the value of indigenous buildings.

It’s really hard to believe that, at one time, the Mayans were among the most advanced and civilized societies in the ancient world.  They charted the night skies, developed intricate farming techniques and created their own form of writing.  Now, their descendants are peddling homemade wares for a few American dollars and destroying those carefully and painfully-constructed edifices to even out some roads.  I can only hope the vandals in the Nohmul case will endure some type of severe punishment.

Happy Mother’s Day!

“I summon you now,
Not to think of
The ceaseless battle,
With pain and ill health,
The frailty and the anguish.
No, today I remember,
The creator,
The lion-hearted.”

Jocks Over Books?

PublicEmployees

A recent examination of state salary databases, coupled with media reports, has proven one of my worst nightmares to be true: coaches are among the highest-paid public employees.  I’m not talking book coaches, or lifestyle coaches.  Of the thousands of state employees, 27 football coaches, 13 basketball coaches and 1 hockey coach rest comfortably atop the heap.  These are collegiate coaches, not high school or grade school folks.  The study point out that most of the money comes – not from taxes – but revenue the teams’ generate.  But, it also highlights that even the most mediocre of coaches can earn millions of dollars, while athletes can suffer near-fatal injuries, and that collegiate sports money rarely ends up in the coffers of the overall university system.  Now, I know why the U.S. keeps sliding down the academic pole, while even some “Third World” nations are climbing up.  Sad, so sad!  Pray for the poor children who are blessed with bigger brains than muscles.  Our education system keeps tossing them by the wayside.

Best Quote of the Week

“And, I know there are a lot of moms out there who often go without the care they need, or the checkups they know they should get because they’re worrying about that co-pay that has to go to gas or to groceries or to the new soccer uniform instead. …So, we decided that needed to change.  In a country as wealthy as this one, there was no reason why a family’s security should be determined by the chance of an illness or an accident.  We decided to do something about it.”

– President Obama, about the Affordable Health Care Act, on Friday, May 10.

Obama went on later to say that pregnancy will not be considered a “pre-existing condition” under the Act, which was undoubtedly the best part of his speech.

Worst Quote of the Week

“It’s no secret that our nation may very well be experiencing the hand of judgment.  It is no secret that we all are concerned that our nation may be in a time of decline.  Our nation has seen judgment not once, but twice, on September 11.  And, that’s why we’re going to have 911 pray on that day.  Is there anything better that we could do on that day rather than to humble ourselves and to pray to an Almighty God?”

Rep. Michele Bachmann of Minnesota, in a prayer service, stating that the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks and the ambush of the U.S. embassy in Benghazi, Libya on September 11, 2012 were both signs from God.

Once again, a right-wing extremist has belittled the tragedy of terrorism by dismissing it as “God’s judgment.”  This reminds me of the time when that other redneck asshole, Jerry Falwell, claimed the September 11, 2001 attacks were the results of God’s judgment on America because of abortion, homosexuality and other so-called deviancies.  Falwell eventually apologized for the comment, and I wonder how long it’ll take before Bachmann realizes her head is still not screwed on right.

Most Convoluted Quote of the Week

“[Texas Gov. Sam Houston] made a powerful decision that cost him his governorship.  He was against slavery, and he stood up and very passionately said, ‘Texas does not need to leave the union over this issue of slavery.’  But, that’s the type of principled leadership, that’s the type of courage that I hope people across the country [will show] on this issue of scouts and keeping the Boy Scouts the organization that it is today.”

Texas Governor Rick Perry, equating the Boy Scouts’ anti-gay policies to the stand against slavery.

The list of idiotic statements from Perry’s mouth keeps getting longer and longer.  I cringe every time he speaks because – like Ted Nugent – I know it’s not going to make sense.  Lord, please deliver us from such madness!  Lord?  Are you listening?  Goddamnit!

Strangest Quote of the Week

media.media.12b8bd4d-fcf4-4028-b0b1-3632b6b20807.normalized

“Help, reproductive instinct, loneliness and quiet revenge on the church.  I cannot be a priest as a gay man, but I can reproduce myself as often as I want.”

– Markus K, a prolific German sperm donor, trying to explain himself.

The story broke recently in Munich’s “Abendzeitung,” or “Evening News.”  Markus K apparently has fathered 22 children with 17 lesbian women.  Two more of his children are supposedly due this summer.  I wish I could get paid for producing awesome sperm samples.  I mean, I know I’d make a butt-load of money.  Who would think manual labor could pay so well!  But, alas, I have a greater responsibility to society, as a whole, than to believe my sperm cells must be preserved like seeds in the “Doomsday Seed Vault.”  I also don’t think a porn career would sit well with my family.  So, I’ll just have to stick with my homemade videos.  Just so Markus and his overactive hands will know – YOU’RE NOT THAT SPECIAL!  Bringing children into the world is no way to wreak revenge on a church, you dumb ass!
