Photo of the Week – August 22, 2020

During a virtual roll-call at the Democratic National Convention on Tuesday, the 18th, the Rhode Island delegation was represented by John Bordieri, the executive chef at Iggy’s Boardwalk, a seafood restaurant on Narragansett Bay.  Bordieri initially bemoaned how badly both the seafood and restaurant industries have been hit by the current COVID-19 pandemic – while a masked man stood next to him holding a plate of fried calamari.

As many discussed the beautiful beachfront setting and / or the idea of dining on fried calamari, many wondered who the beefy man perched beside Bordieri is – and if he does private parties!  I don’t know what calamari or beachfronts have to do with politics, but this setup added a colorful diversion to an otherwise lackluster convention.

Dumbest Quote of the Week – August 15, 2020

“The closest thing is in 1917, they say, the great pandemic. It certainly was a terrible thing where they lost anywhere from 50 to 100 million people, probably ended the Second World War.  All the soldiers were sick.  That was a terrible situation.”

President Donald Trump, incorrectly stating that the 1918-20 Spanish Flu pandemic brought an end to World War II.

Quick world history lesson: World War I ended in November of 1918 with the signing of the Treaty of Versailles.  World War II began with Germany’s invasion of Poland in 1939 and ended with both the collapse of the Nazi regime and the bombing of Japan in 1945.

Worst Quote of the Week – August 8, 2020

“[Children] don’t have a problem, they just don’t have a problem.  It doesn’t have an impact on them.  I’ve watched some doctors say they’re totally immune.”

President Donald Trump, in a video commentary on why schools should re-open, amidst the COVID-19 pandemic.

The video had been tweeted out by Trump’s reelection campaign, but was promptly removed by Twitter for violating its newly-minted standards against spreading false information.

Worst Quote of the Week – August 1, 2020

“Hello, you don’t need a mask. There is a cure.”

Stella Immanuel, a Houston-based primary care physician and minister who, in a recent video, declared that the COVID-19 coronavirus can be easily cured.

The video was retweeted by – who else – Donald Trump, which Twitter promptly removed.  Immanuel has already joined the President in touting hydroxychloroquine as a cure for COVID-19, but also has a history of making particularly outlandish statements — including that the uterine disorder endometriosis is caused by sex with demons that takes place in dreams.

For the curious: incubus.

Video of the Week – July 18, 2020

A school principal shared some thoughts with Betsy Devos, U.S. Secretary of Education, in a video shared by Bored Teachers.  The 2-minute video synopsizes the heroic efforts that teachers took on when the pandemic hit and how Devos needs to “sit down somewhere” and just listen.  In fact, that’s the best advice we can give to any political figure – especially those like Devos and others in the Trump Administration who sit in their gilded cages in the ivory towers of wealth and privilege; far removed from the chaos and drama of REAL lives.

Teachers like this gentleman stand at the front lines in the brutal world of education and are now faced with the very real threat of illness and death, as the Trump gang threatens to pull education funding from states that don’t open their schools next month for the start of the new academic year.
